An active footwear company that earned global fame in the nineties, Skechers has managed to maintain its grasp on trends, comfort and performance-enhancing technology ever since.

The history of Skechers

A true nineties baby with a history spanning over three decades, Skechers was established in Manhattan Beach, California in 1992. Founded by father and son duo, Robert and Michael Greenberg, the brand originally acted as a distributor for other branded footwear, however the Greenbergs swiftly realised they wanted to design their own range of shoes and so the Skechers we know today was born.

Originally devised to appeal to the young, Skechers took inspiration from the trending styles of the nineties and quickly became synonymous with the decade. Their first – and for a while, only – product was the Cascades logger boot, the perfect boot for all those nineties grunge fans. In 1995 the brand released their first sneaker, The Roadies shoe, which immediately became the must-have style of the time and remains one of the brand’s most iconic designs to this day.

Still owned by Robert and Michael Greenberg, the brand has continued to thrive whilst building a reputation for on-trend style teamed with supreme comfort. Diversifying since their conception, these days Skechers are more renowned for their focus on performance footwear that appeal to the casual sportswear market, thanks to their market leading technology and focus on the wearer’s needs.

With ranges covering men’s, women’s and kids’ shoes, Skechers now produce a huge variety of athletic designs as well as casual, fashion-forward styles and comfort shoes from relaxed fit to memory foam.

Are Skechers cool?

f you’re wondering whether Skechers are a cool choice of footwear, just look at the celebrities and athletes who have endorsed the brand over the years. From noughties pop queens Britney and Christina to Beatles legend Ringo Starr, and more recently, multi-platinum songstress Camila Cabello, Skechers have been a favourite of the celebs since the beginning.

Unsure how to style Skechers, we’re here to help! For a sporty or streetwear vibe, a pair of Squad trainers or Ultra Flex Bright slip ons are perfect to match with shorts or a tennis skirt. On the other hand, if you want to embrace a smart-casual style, why not opt for some Desert Kiss sandals or Melson Ramilo wallabees and pair with some smart jeans or pants.

Whether Skechers advocate Kim Kardashian is your inspiration or you’re intrigued by the brand earning the title of official shoe for the IRONMAN European Tour, Skechers are most definitely a stylish option.

When investing in a new pair of Skechers, it’s important you get the right fit for you. Whilst sizing can differ from brand to brand, Skechers usually fit true to size so there’s no need to worry from that perspective.

If you find you sometimes fall between whole sizes, it’s also handy to know that a selection of Skechers shoes do come in half sizes, so keep an eye out for those styles if you think that will help with the fit.

Can Skechers be washed?

When it comes to cleaning your trainers, it can be difficult to know which cleaning methods you can trust as the last thing you want to do is damage your shoes. Usually, there are only one or two ways to correctly clean your shoes, but if you’re wondering how to wash Skechers, take a look at a couple of our top tips below:

  • Leather Skechers: clean with a slightly damp rag, soft rubber sponge or brush, and apply a leather polishto keep your shoes in good condition. Find how to polish leather shoes in our dedicated guide.
  • Classic sandals: a damp cloth is usually all you’ll need to remove most dust and dirt.
  • Mesh trainers: similar to sandals, a damp cloth can be used to clean the upper of the shoe, with a brush being suitable to clean the sole.
  • Machine-washable Skechers: there is a great selection of Skechers that you can easily throw into the washing machine, just make sure you check the product description and label first!
  • Hand washing Skechers: some Skechers are made of specialist materials that aren’t fit for the washing machine, so if you want to opt for the safest method of handwashing, begin by removing excess dirt with a small brush or towel. Follow this by mixing warm water and a couple of drops of washing detergent in a bowl, then dip a brush or towel in and carefully wipe your shoes. Once cleaned, allow to air dry.
