Howard Webb: From Rotherham to Real Madrid!
On 30th April, Howard Webb flew to Spain to officiate the Champions League Semi-Final clash between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich at the world renowned Bernabeu stadium. He later faced the wrath of Jose Mourinho whose Real Madrid “Galacticos” team were knocked out the biggest competition in football in front of 70,000 of their own fans!
Away from the spotlight of the world’s sports media Howard Webb’s of the field life is in complete contrast to his very public and unforgiving role as a top class referee. A few weeks before flying to Madrid, for example, he was spotted shopping in his local branch of Wynsors World of Shoes in Thurcroft! Born and bred in Rotherham, he leads a relatively normal life with his wife and three children. Webb, who was awarded an MBE for his services to football, is also a Police Sargeant. In 2010 he chose to reduce his hours to focus on his role as one of the world’s top referees. In fact, he visited the Wynsors store to purchase a pair of boots appropriate for his Police Work.
Wynsors World of Shoes, Store Manager, Lisa Dearden, (pictured with Webb in store) said “He came in with his three children a week or so before he was flying to Madrid to referee the Champions League Semi Final. He seemed a really nice bloke; he was more than happy to pose for pictures and was happy with the saving he got on his Magnum Boots!”
