We were excited and proud to receive a fantastic thank you letter from our friends at Macmillan Cancer Support for the help we have given them over the past two years. Below is the letter from our Macmillan Fundraising Manager Seb Farrell.

We Change LivesDuring our two year partnership, Wynsors raised an incredible £70,859.96 for Macmillan Cancer Support. This was an unprecedented achievement and will make a huge difference to people affected by cancer and their families.

There are currently over two million people living in the UK with or beyond a cancer diagnosis, and that number will rise to four million by 2030. The needs of people affected by cancer are not fully met today, let alone tomorrow, so Macmillan must increase its support for people affected by cancer and drive change to ensure cancer care is fit for purpose in the future.

No matter who you are, where you live, or which cancer you have, you should get the best treatment, care and support. Our ambition is to reach and improve the lives of everyone living with cancer and inspire millions of others to do the same.

At Macmillan, we rely on voluntary donations and fundraising for 98% of our income and we simply couldn’t continue the work that we do without our dedicated supporters like Wynsors.

By raising such an amazing amount of money and by increasing awareness of Macmillan, Wynsors have changed lives and we really can’t thank you enough.

Money-Raised-and-its-impact

Macmillan provides medical, emotional, financial and practical support to people affected by cancer and push for better cancer care. Below are some examples of the services which £70,859.96 can help to fund:

  • £68,542 could pay for two Macmillan cancer information and support officers for a year, meaning more people affected by cancer will have someone to answer their questions and talk to about their concerns.
  • £52,720 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for a year, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
  • £60,573 could operate our phone service for a week. In this time, our cancer support specialists could Image-1answer 1,646 calls and emails from people who want questions answered, need practical or financial support, or just want to chat.
  • £10 could pay for 20 copies of our Understanding chemotherapy This includes sections on how the treatment works, when and how it is given, and possible side effects.

Money worries are the last thing you need when you are facing the toughest fight of your life but following a diagnosis, the average person is £570 a month worse off. Not being healthy enough to work results in a loss of income and this, combined with the increased costs associated with travelling to and from hospital appointments and higher heating bills, have a massive impact on quality of life.

Image-2That’s why Macmillan’s welfare rights and benefits services are so important to people living with cancer. A Macmillan benefits adviser can offer specialist advice to help ease money concerns, including information on benefits, tax credits, grants and loans. You can speak to these advisers face-to-face or over the phone, and they’ll help you to work out what financial help you could be entitled to.

In 2013, our benefits advice service helped 130,000 people affected by cancer. The money raised by Wynsors could help our benefits advice team to secure £1.35m in benefits for people living with cancer and make a real difference to their quality of life.

“When the battle just to sit up and eat your breakfast leaves you exhausted, filling in detailed forms is out of the question. The Macmillan team came in at a time when I was facing financial ruin on top of dealing with cancer. Macmillan understood our situation and immediately helped complete the forms to ensure we were awarded the correct benefits.  We were then able to pay our bills again; it literally helped us to survive.” – Andrew, who went from successful Business Development Manager to having no source of income for his family.

We also provide grants to people who need help with cancer related expenses. A Macmillan grant is a one-off payment for adults, young people or children with cancer, to cover a wide range of practical needs. This can include things such as heating bills, extra clothing, or a much needed break. Macmillan grants act as a financial lifeline, helping with extra costs and relieving some of the stress and pressure that money worries can create.

In 2013, Macmillan gave 32,500 people non-repayable grants worth a total of £9.65m. The money raised by Wynsors is enough to award over 250 people with a Macmillan grant to help with the cost of cancer.

“I would like to convey my sincere thanks for the cheque I recently received for £300.

The grant has relieved an immense amount of stress from me. In less than three months, my washing machine had broken and could not be repaired, my husband’s bed had to be replaced, and he had lost weight again and clothes had to be replaced. I cannot tell you the relief I felt from the help you gave me”.

Thank you on behalf of the countless people affected by cancer who you have helped. I would also like to say a huge THANK YOU and emphasise what a pleasure it was working with the management team and the Wynsors employees.

We would also like to say a big thank you to Seb without whose excellent support and enthusiasm we would not have raised such a large sum.
