Decide On A Route.

Walking Route

First, you’ll need to decide on your hiking route, bearing in mind it’s wise to break yourself in slowly so don’t over-exert yourself on your first attempt! If you’re hiking on your own then make sure you let someone know where you’re going, especially if you are new to this. Charging up your phone before you leave is also advisable but if you happen to get stuck in an area with no coverage this will be of little use. And remember if you’re a beginner you shouldn’t be attempting anything long and strenuous on your own anyway so make sure you are planning a route that is okay for your ability level.

Sort Your Supplies.

Supplies

Take enough supplies to see you through your journey – light snacks and water are essential, so make sure you fill up your water bottle before you go. If there is a group of you hiking why not make a whole day of it, a picnic in the sun is the perfect way to break up a hike and replenish for the return journey. Check the weather forecast before you go, and don’t forget a sturdy backpack for your supplies – you can see our selection of Sports Bag here if you don’t already have a suitable one.

Have The Right Equipment.

Equipment

Next, and probably most importantly, suitable footwear is essential, especially if you would still like to be able to walk the following day. Unsuitable footwear will only result in blisters and sore feet so make sure you are properly kitted out before you go. Comfortable boots are especially important if your trail is going to have hills, rocky or uneven ground. Try to make sure your footwear is comfortable whilst providing sturdy support around your ankles. And of course, always make sure you are wearing suitable socks. You’ll need something thick with your walking boots to prevent blisters.

Once your feet are protected make sure to dress the rest of yourself suitably. It is always advisable to take a light rain jacket, but also bear in mind even if the weather is on the cooler side you are likely to warm up the further into your hike you get. You will also need durable lightweight trousers, preferably waterproof, and a t-shirt/shirt and jumper suitable for the forecasted weather conditions.

The great thing about hiking is that it can be adapted to suit all levels of fitness. If you’re desperate to shed a few pounds before your summer holidays, but the winter months have left you feeling lethargic and less than enthusiastic about any form of physical exertion then hiking is the perfect way to break this. You can do as much or as little as you like.

The Check List

  • Tell someone where you are going
