Reebok Trainers and Sports Shoes. In the 1890s, Joseph William Foster made some of the first known running shoes with spikes in them. By 1895, he was making shoes by hand for top runners and an international clientele of distinguished athletes. In 1958 J.W. Foster and Sons was changed to Reebok. In 1979 three Reebok running shoes were introduced in the U.S at $60 a pair, the most expensive running shoes on the market at the time.Reebok surged in popularity after the introduction of the Reebok Freestyle athletic shoe, which was specifically designed for women and came out when the aerobics fitness craze started. Not only was the Reebok Freestyle popular as athletic footwear but became an icon of the 1980s fashion scene helping encourage the acceptance by adults of athletic footwear in the fashion arena. It was also the Reebok Freestyle that inspired the design of the Reebok Classic trainer, undoubtedly one of Reeboks most successful trainers of all time. The Reebok classic is still as popular today as it was when it was first introduced way back in 1987.
In the late 1990s, Reebok began to further align the brand with a select few of the world’s most talented, exciting and cutting-edge athletes. Since then, the company has focused on those athletes who represent the top echelon of sports and fitness. Reebok is currently endorsed by Thierry Henry, Andriy Shevchenko, Amir Khan, cricketers Mahela Jayawardene and MS Dhoni to name but a few.
In 2002 Reebok launched Rbk – a collection of street-inspired footwear and apparel. With many of the industry’s most marketable and valuable sports assets on its roster Reebok paired its athletes with some of the music industry’s most successful hip-hop and rap artists. Reebok also formed a partnership with rap musician Jay-Z, producing the "S. Carter Collection by Rbk," Jay-Z became the first non-athlete to have a signature athletic footwear collection! The launch of Jay Z’s first shoe was extremely successful around the world and later that year, Reebok teamed up with another rapper 50 Cent for the equally successful “G Unit Collection by Rbk.”
