Lonsdale. Lonsdale is a very British brand and even bears the name of the British aristocrat and boxing aficionado The Earl of Lonsdale after whom the legendary Lonsdale belt was named.
The Lonsdale Company founded in 1960, produced boxing equipment before branching out into sports and fashion clothing that was taken to heart by the emerging Mod culture of the time. The company is named after Hugh Cecil Lowther who was the 5th Earl of Lonsdale and organised boxing matches around 1909 and was president of the National Sporting Club of Britain. Every boxer who became a champion and defended his title successfully three times received the Lonsdale Belt hence the close association the brand has to boxing even to this day. Founder, Bernard Hart, an ex-boxer, who had started his own clothing company, visited the then Earl of Lonsdale in the early 1960s and asked for permission to use his name for a clothing brand targeted initially towards boxers. This soon changed and the firm began to make a wide range of fashion items
Lonsdale has since been worn by some of the greatest names on boxing including:
Muhamad Ali, Mike, Tyson, Henry Cooper and Lennox Lewis. Latterly also the brand was picked up by the likes of Paul Weller who took to the brand for its mod roots. You can be part of that heritage by wearing the Lonsdale brand yourself at Wynsors.com.
