Shoe storage ideas always the last thing on your to-do list? Find advice from the shoe experts at Wynsors.

No matter how much we dream of walk-in wardrobes, the reality is that most of us are not blessed with spare rooms that we can dedicate to clothing. More’s the pity!

In fact, sourcing innovative shoe storage ideas is the last job on many people’s lists, hence why our favourite footwear often ends up strewn at the bottom of the stairs, in the hallway or on the bedroom floor. The horror. Never fear though – with a little creativity, almost any space can be transformed into an organised haven using these handy storage solutions.

When you’re as footwear-obsessed as we are, keeping shoes in tip-top condition is a high priority, so we try to wipe, brush and/or polish each pair and store them in a clean, dry environment to ensure they last as long as possible. And look fantastic, of course.

Reusing your shoe boxes

Keeping old shoe boxes is a great idea if you’re stuck for space (and have a huge collection, some of which that don’t always get to see the light of day!).

That way, you can keep shoes neatly organised in their boxes and stack them on top of each other in wardrobes or cupboards. If the shoe box you are using is not the one that came with the shoes, why not take a picture of each pair and stick it on the front? Then you can easily see where they’re stored while protecting them from dust or getting scuffed in a pile.

For styles that you wear regularly however, you might want to try another solution…

Standing shoe rack

Investing in a good standing shoe rack is never a mistake if you’re the proud owner of footwear worth displaying (we’re talking to you, there, with 20 pairs of box-fresh adidas Originals – consider yourself seen!). You’ll be able to keep your prized possessions safe from harm, extremely well-organised and be able show them off to anyone and everyone, as every good shoe devotee does. Try placing yours at the foot of your bed or in the hallway for clever shoe storage to impress your pals.

Coat hooks

Dealing with small spaces? This idea has us hooked (sorry).

A row of old hooks can be affixed to the wall below where you store your coats in the porch or at the bottom of a wardrobe, to make extra space for shoes and keep things tidy at the same time. Just hang a shoe on each hook (first ensuring that the fabric isn’t likely to stretch out) and you’ll be smiling when it comes to finding the kids’ shoes in the morning rush.

A recycled ladder

Another for those who are skilled in DIY, an old ladder that’s cluttering up your garage is a blessing in disguise. Make sure it’s dusted and treated (a wooden ladder may need sanding and varnishing), before positioning it in a convenient place.

Each step is a proud little pedestal for a pair of kicks – and it looks really cool too.

Give old ladders a new lease of life by using them as a clever shoe storage rack.

Hanging shoe rack

It turns out that some people don’t like staring at a bunch of shoes – we know, we’re as confused as you are. But, if you’re sick of seeing the whole family’s hoard all piled up by the front door or you’re severely lacking in floor space, a hanging shoe rack placed over a bedroom door, wardrobe or even a porch, can be a great space-saver.

Pop a pair into each slot et voilà! They’re easy to reach in a hurry, hidden from view when you walk into the room and they won’t disrupt your home’s feng shui either. Bonus!

Better yet, the individual spaces will ensure you never misplace a single shoe again. If you put some thought into it, you can organise by season and purpose so that your most reached for designs can always be found in the handiest place. Rotating the shoes you keep in these depending on whether it is summer or winter is a great way to let seasonal styles take the spotlight.

A recycled pallet

Recycling is a great way to turn an old piece of junk into something useful, and it can give your décor a nice industrial edge to boot. First, find yourself an old pallet – supermarkets, construction sites or DIY warehouses can be good places to start. Give it a clean, paint in your favourite colour and ta-da! You have your very own unique and useful shoe rack. When you’re finished, you can either lay it out flat if you’re lucky enough to have room (this makes your shoe collection look like it belongs in a shop!), or lean it safely(!) against the wall for handy heel storage – just tuck each heel into the small gaps in your pallet.

Strategically placed shelving

Big fan of boots? Figuring out how to store shoes and boots together is not an easy task, particularly if you’d like them to look nice on display.

A variety of mismatched shelves makes for impressive interior designing. Use a mix of short and long shelves to store shoes of different heights; it could be a row of canvas pumps under a single shelf bearing a pair of boots, and a short, double shelf for two favourite sets of heels. The possibilities are endless if you choose a nice layout for your shelving!

You can even make your longer boots stand up too; if you don’t already own shapers, you can put an old magazine in each foot, rolled up as though you’re about to swat a fly. Make sure to plan your shelf spacing strategically if you do this though, there must be enough room for each boot to stand!

Woven baskets

A simple one but a goodie. If you’re struggling for room and you’re tired of the sight of your shoes, woven baskets tucked into cupboards or slotted into furniture cabinets are an inspired idea. You can have one each for every member of the family so nothing gets mixed up, and they look much tidier, particularly in the hallway or at the bottom of your bed.
